If Your House were Made of Glass

If your house were made of glass, would your private life be any different? If you knew that people were keeping track of every choice you made, every word you said, every little thing you did, how would it change the way you lived?

Integrity. It’s a rare commodity.

When I was about ten or eleven, I couldn’t make up my mind as to what exactly it was I wanted to be when I grew up, but I knew for certain what I did not want for a career, and Picture2that was teaching. That decision was for the sole reason that I wanted the freedom to make my own mistakes, my own wrong choices and my own bad decisions without scarring my students for life if I ever ruined mine. Impressionable as I was back then, I knew very well that people who learned from other people studied not only the words they wrote on the chalkboard but also – and most importantly – everything that happened after the bell.

When I saw that they were not following the truth of the gospel message, I said to Peter in front of all the others, “Since you, a Jew by birth, have discarded the Jewish laws and are living like a Gentile, why are you now trying to make these Gentiles follow the Jewish traditions? – Galatians 2:14, NLT

But you only have to grow up a little to realize that you don’t have to have a degree in Education to make or break someone else’s life. Every person is a teacher to every other person. Everyone learns from everyone else. Every Christian’s life is a reflection of the God he worships.

I did eventually teach, for a season, to some degree. Yet in spite of keeping true to my word and not pursuing a career in Education, and in spite of having good, sturdy cement walls and a shady roof over my head, I am constantly reminded that God is watching. And He is the only audience that matters.
